An exceptional decorative nautilus shell, intricately engraved with floral motifs, geometric borders and delicate pierced detailing.
Measuring 15 cm in length, this striking piece showcases the remarkable craftsmanship involved in transforming a natural shell into an elaborate work of decorative art. Its warm orange-and-cream striped exterior contrasts beautifully with the luminous pearlescent interior, while the fine engraving reveals intricate patterns across its curved surface.
The piece was acquired at auction as a Communard shell, associated with the French political exiles deported to New Caledonia following the Paris Commune of 1871. These historical objects are valued for their distinctive craftsmanship and connection to a fascinating chapter in French and colonial history.
A compelling addition to a collection of antique natural history objects, curiosities or decorative pieces, this shell makes a sculptural statement displayed on a bookshelf, console or cabinet.
